Heavy haulage is a specialist job. When you are moving abnormal indivisible loads such as large plant, transformers, steel beams, site cranes or industrial tanks, the transport plan matters as much as the vehicle. Experienced operators work with low-loaders, step-frame and extendable trailers, plus modular and hydraulic trailer combinations where axle loadings and dimensions demand it. The right heavy haulage operator will understand the practical realities of getting large, heavy equipment from collection point to site without costly delays.
Not every load requires the same approach. A competent operator will assess dimensions, weight, axle loading and delivery constraints before selecting the correct trailer. They should be familiar with STGO categories 1, 2 and 3 and know when movement notifications are required. For larger movements, this often includes VR1 notifications and liaison with police forces and National Highways. Route surveys are equally important, identifying bridge restrictions, tight junctions, overhead services and site access issues before the vehicle leaves the depot.
They want accurate weights, dimensions, loading arrangements and site information because that is how problems are avoided. Check that the operator holds a valid operator licence, carries suitable goods-in-transit insurance and has proven abnormal load experience with similar cargo. A good heavy haulage company will explain the transport method, trailer choice and notification requirements clearly.
