DVSA audit preparation from someone who knows what inspectors look for

A DVSA audit rarely causes problems because of one major failure. More often, operators come unstuck through small gaps that have built up over time. A good consultant will review the same records a DVSA auditor is likely to request, check how systems work in practice, and identify weaknesses before they become findings. That can include preparation for a DVSA audit, a maintenance investigation visit, or an Earned Recognition audit.

What an experienced consultant will actually check

The best preparation is not paperwork for its own sake. It is proving that your systems are being followed every day. Consultants typically carry out a mock audit, sample records and trace evidence from start to finish. They will look closely at PMI inspections, brake performance testing, driver defect reporting, tachograph analysis, drivers' hours compliance, maintenance planning and document retention. They should also challenge anything that does not stand up to scrutiny.

  • PMI records and completed repair paperwork
  • Brake test evidence and maintenance history
  • Driver defect reporting processes
  • Tachograph analysis and drivers' hours controls
  • Policies, procedures and supporting records

Choosing a DVSA audit consultant

Ask how many operator licence audits, maintenance investigations and Earned Recognition assessments they have prepared operators for. A practical consultant should explain what the auditor will ask for, show where evidence is commonly missing, and help fix gaps before the auditor finds them. Look for someone with transport management experience, not just compliance theory. The aim is a realistic assessment of your operation and a clear action plan. Through ETM, operators can shortlist consultants by region and send one enquiry to multiple specialists for DVSA audit support.
